Let’s Talk About Houses

Lisbon Architecture Triennale

Competitions

This catalogue documents the two competitions that the Architecture Triennale launched for its second edition: The Competition for Cova da Moura (an area in Amadora located in the outskirts of Lisbon ) that involved twenty-one universities of Architecture and Land-scape Architecture and the International Competition A House in Luanda: Patio and Pa-vilion. It intends to answer the question: “how can architecture contribute to improve the living conditions in Cova da Moura?”, involving teachers and students from the Portu-guese universities in the production of projects (from which thirty were selected).

The International Competition challenged architects to design a single-family house for the capital of Angola, Luanda at a very low construction cost. The catalogue includes in-terviews with project commissioners, respectively the architects Manuel Aires Mateus and João Luís Carrilho da Graça, as well as texts by Delfim Sardo (chief curator of Triennale 2010) and Angolan sociologist António Tomás. The photographic contributions of Inês Gonçalves and the American photographer Susan Meiselas are particularly relevant.
